Importance of an Avian Veterinarian

Because birds are very different from cats and dogs,it is very important to find an avian veterinarian. This means one who has had specialized training in the treatment of birds. It would be especially good to find one who specializes in birds.

It is recommended you take a new bird to the vet for an exam to ensure it is healthy, and to establish a baseline blood chemistry for comparison in case of illness. Birds should also have an annual 'well bird exam' to catch any potential problems. It is good to develop a relationship with your vet. Find a vet or animal hospital that you can contact at night and weekends in an emergency. Be sure to keep your vet's phone number handy.
